    Alvi's BBQ in Downtown Wyandotte

    Alvi's: BBQ by Design

Alvi’s is a cup of southern inspiration, a dollop of Michigan ingenuity, a heavy dash of Detroit and platefuls of the finest smoked meats downriver.

If you want good barbecue, this is the place.

    Alvi's BBQ in Downtown Wyandotte

Al Fritz, the owner, has left no detail to chance from the décor to the menu; everything has been crafted to his exacting specifications.

Alvi’s was no afterthought. When Al and Danielle Lesko, the general manager, decided on a barbecue restaurant two years ago after buying the old Leechee Gardens building,
they sampled barbecue from the neighbor's backyard to Detroit's most famous establishments. The result of their culinary expedition: “We can do better.” Since then, the menu has been honed and refined; recipes have been tested, tasted and perfected with the help of chef Daniel Wood. The result is a lean menu where everything is done right. Entrees include, St. Louis and baby back ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, Cajun catfish, and brisket. The ribs are rubbed with Al's own secret recipe and accompanied by his homemade sauces. All meats are premium grade and smoked daily. There are a plethora of side dishes to choose from including two kinds of coleslaw, sweet potato fries, collard greens, green beans, salads, and two styles of corn bread. Desserts are house made and include peach cobbler, banana bread pudding, brownie sundae, and blueberry cornbread.

Thirsty after all that barbecue? Alvi’s has a great selection of southern inspired cocktails like the Cucumber Cooler and the Kentucky Mule. Topping the list is their Bad to the Bone bloody mary made with their own house mix and served with a St. Louis rib garnish.

Not a liquor drinker? Alvi’s has a full wine menu and a rotating selection of Michigan craft beers on tap.

The décor is as thoughtful as the menus. The tables are hand-worked, reclaimed wood from Detroit with a unique design based loosely on English boarding house cafeterias. All the woodwork including the bar, hostess station, light fixtures, tables, and seats were hand finished specifically for Alvi’s by Al. The bar and woodwork were all constructed and installed by master woodworker Keith Spagnol.

This is not Al’s first go-round at renovating a century old historic building in Wyandotte. Al is equally proud of the renovation of his first restaurant, Gizzmo’s right next door. Beautiful Interior at Alvi's BBQGizzmo’s features a modern speakeasy ambiance and an extensive tapas menu and thin crust pizza as well as their signature martinis. The sauce and recipe for the pizza are borrowed from the former Vitale’s of Grosse Ile with the oversight of Serafina Vitale. Serafina is also assistant manager at Alvi’s BBQ.

If you want a good look at Alvi’s online, go to their facebook page where you can see pictures of the interior, the staff, the menu and lots more. And of course, you could always stop by and give the food a try. For a restaurant based on smoke and searing heat, Alvi’s is remarkably cool both in ambiance and comfort.
